Hinely Family History and Pictures

Welcome to Ed and Paula Hinely's Family Genealogy Pages

The Salzburgers

On March 12, 1734, a small group of about sixty religious exiles from the Principality and Archbishopric of Salzburg arrived in Georgia seeking religious freedom. Later in that year they were joined by a second group and by 1741, a total of approximately 300 of these Salzburger Lutheran exiles had come to Georgia where they founded the town of Ebenezer on the Savannah River, about twenty five miles north of the city of Savannah. Other German speaking peoples - mostly Swiss Germans, Palatines and Swabians - also joined the Salzburgers at Ebenezer. In time, all of these Germanic people became known as "Salzburgers".

The few hundred Georgia Salzburgers were part of a much larger story in European history, a drama that unfolded in 1731 when 20,000 Protestants were forced to leave the land of Salzburg, which was an independent principality and archbishopric at that time. This event was triggered when the Prince and Archbishop Leopold von Firmian issued the Edict of Expulsion on October 31, 1731, ordering all Lutherans and Calvinists to leave the land. The great majority of these people relocated in East Prussia - approximately 100 in Holland, 300 in Georgia, and others in various German Lutheran states. (The above is taken from the Georgia Salzburger website at
http://www.georgiasalzburgers.com/salzburgers.htm. )

Among these Salzburgers were two brothers: Jacob and John (Americanized from Johannes) Hinely. My family is descended from John Hinely. The spelling of the Hinely name has changed over the years. I have seen the name spelled Heinle and Heinley. I am not sure which was the original spelling; although the Georgia Salzburger website has it spelled Heinle.

My father was Richard Duren Hinely; his father was James Jacob Hinely, Sr. who was married to Laura Lillian (Lollie) Pharis. Daddy married Ovella Hand. They had four children: Pamela Kay, Edward Richard (me), Annette Luree and Thomas Cecil Hinely. Daddy went to be with the Lord on February 23, 1996. My mother is presently a healthy 80 years old.

On this page, I am going to include pictures mostly of Daddy's family, including his parents, siblings, grandparents, etc. Among the surnames on the Hinely side of my family tree, other than Hinely, are Pharis, Lee, Futrell, Griner, Edwards, Snellgrove, Futrell, Gieger, Zeigler, and Southwell. I don't have pictures of all of these, but hopefully the picture library is growing. Hopefully I have the names of those pictured listed correctly. If they are incorrect, feel free to email me and let me know. Also, please feel free to send me any other pictures or stories that I don't have here. They would be most welcome. You are welcome to copy any of the pictures from this site.

We hope you enjoy the site.
