Gordon

Welcome to Ed and Paula Hinely's Family Genealogy Pages

The Gordon surname is deeply rooted on both sides of Paula's family, but has deeper roots on her mother's side because her maiden name is Gordon. The Gordons are a very industrious family that I have begun to define as becomers. They became what they needed to become in order to survive in the United States as it evolved. They were the Cherokee, Irish, and German who came together to form a family. They walked on the trail of tears. Over came that, became properous, lost everything, endured the depression, share cropped, fought the wars, and grasped education. They denied their indian and German ancestry when it was not popular and became just Irish and Dutch, in order to protect their offspring, and now their offspring is discovering their true ancestry and embracing it again. Enjoy these pictures and let them tell the stories that are hidden within them.

Mom said this was taken shortly before his death.

I just think it was a true blessing to be one of the little ones to have the pleasure to be able to sit on Grandpa's knee. Grandma and Grandpa are just an imagination for some of us. It's enough to bring a tear to my eyes. For any of us that have the joy of seeing our grands, we should thank the good Lord for it.

This picture brings tears to mom's eyes. If you will notice, grandma's coat has the lining coming out of it. This picture was taken during a time when the family was struggling finicially. They were sharecroppers and this was taken just after the depression.

Cherokee Nation

The Eastern band of Cherokee were not who our family descended from, but I found their website very helpful. I also found them very helpful when I visited their reservation and they educated me a great deal about our ancestors. I would encourage anyone to go pay them a visit!
